Couples massage in Amsterdam at the end of a working day

Couples massage is the booking written for a room with two people in it, and on this site it is the reason the domain exists at all. It divides into two arrangements that cost different amounts and produce different evenings. With one therapist between you, the hour is handed to one of you at a time while the other stays close, and it runs as a single line of attention with pauses in it. A therapist each costs twice as much for every hour, and two sessions run alongside one another in the same room, which fits ninety minutes of evening inside ninety minutes of clock. Couples sharing a working week usually choose between those two on the basis of how much evening the week has left them rather than on preference. Underneath both sits ordinary warm oil work unless you ask for something else, and whichever therapist is in the room decides what her own session includes and says where her limits are before anything begins.

Origins

The two-person treatment room came out of resort spas in the nineteen eighties, where it existed for a practical reason rather than a romantic one: it let couples spend an hour together instead of an hour apart in adjoining rooms. What travelled out of that idea was the convention rather than the architecture, and an outcall version needs no second room at all, because the room you are staying in already holds two people. What changed in the move is the pacing. A spa runs two tables to one clock. A room with one therapist in it runs one thread at whatever speed the evening turns out to want.

The technique

With one therapist, the work is continuous on whoever is on the bed and the change between you is made without breaking the shape of the hour, which is why the swap happens once rather than four times. Long flat-palmed strokes along the back and down the legs, forearm where a thumb would be too sharp, pressure set in the first few minutes and then left alone. With a therapist each, the two of them work independently at their own speed rather than in step, because two bodies that have had completely different days do not want the same hour synchronised down to the minute.

What to expect

She arrives in street clothes with a small bag, or two of them arrive together if you booked a therapist each. The opening few minutes are deliberately unhurried: the lamp rather than the overhead light, the heating turned up a notch, a short exchange in whichever language suits the room. Towels of her own go down over the bed. With one therapist between you, the two of you work out quickly where you want to be, and most couples settle on one of you on the bed and the other in the chair beside it, swapping at the halfway mark she will mention. With a therapist each, the bed takes one of you and the other goes wherever there is space, which in a standard room means the second bed or a mat she brings. Limits are stated at the start, by each woman in the room, in ordinary words. It ends when the booked time ends, without hurry and without anything announcing itself.

Who it suits

Couples who have spent four days on separate schedules and want one hour that belongs to both of them. Anyone whose evening is the only unclaimed slot in a working week. Two people who would rather arrive at the end of the week together than compare notes across a room. It is also the plainest first booking a couple can make with the house, because it asks nothing of the room except a bed and warm air.

Benefits

The two of you come out of it at the same point in the evening rather than at two different ones, which is the part couples on a working trip notice. A week spent on separate timetables tends to end with two people in a room doing different things on different phones, and an hour where neither of you is running anything is the straightforward correction to that.

Length

Sixty minutes works on the evening before an early start and is a real booking rather than a taster. Ninety is the length most couples take on a normal weekday and the one that stops the hour feeling like an appointment. Two hours belongs to an evening with a slow morning behind it, three to the added weekend, and the eight hour block to the Saturday when Sunday owes nobody anything.

Questions

Do both of us have to have a session, or can one of us just be in the room?

One of you can simply be there. Plenty of these bookings are one session with the other partner present, which is arranged and charged as one guest with one therapist, half of what the two of you sharing her would come to, with both of you in the room. Say so in the first message so the arrangement is clear before she travels, rather than being worked out on the doorstep.

Which is better value, one therapist between us or a therapist each?

They are not the same product at two prices. One between you gives each of you roughly half the hour with a pause in the middle. A therapist each, on double the hourly rate, gives you both the whole length at once. If the evening is short because a working day ran late, the second buys you time. If the evening is open, the first is what most couples ask for.

Does my partner have to agree to this before I book it?

Yes, and it is the one condition the house does not soften. A booking for a room with two people in it is only taken where both of them have chosen it. The date, the name, the length and the format can all be a surprise. The fact that it is happening cannot be.

How much notice does a therapist each need?

More than one therapist does, because two evenings have to line up rather than one. On a weekday, two or three days is comfortable and same-day is unlikely. On a Saturday, ask early in the week. A booking with two therapists also confirms with half the fee whatever the notice, and the second half waits until both women have arrived.
